Great Sex from Good Nutrition? Really?

Is there a link between that physically intimate life we have with our partner and how we feed our bodies? This has been quite an interesting and enlightening study: considering how hormones, all hormone production, our overall sex life may be linked to how we care for and nourish our bodies.

The act of sex, for many of us, is both an emotional and spiritual experience, and though there have been many arguments for and against that opinion, what we can not deny is that, well, sex - most definitely - is a physical experience. In considering what contributes to a healthy sex life, all facets (mental, emotional, spiritual, etc.) were definitely taken into consideration but, more importantly were the physical aspects of our heath that, if properly maintained, will contribute to a fuller, more energized, enhanced sexual experience and overall sex life.

Common Sexual Concerns

Two of the most common complaints with men concerning poor sexual performance, generally has to do with lack of libido, or erectile dysfunction. For women, if the complaint isn’t related to lack of sexual arousal, then for some women the problem may be a poor orgasm or vaginal dryness (all of can be accredited to the aging process in some cases; regardless, nutrition can help).

Prior to going out to the local drug store to purchase horny goat seed products, or to the local video shop to pick up those special tablets for arousal enhancement, there seems to be very few people that consider how to remedy their sexual complaints by questioning the anatomy behind the problem. Though all cases are different, two of the most common problems that contribute to poor sexual performance are a lack of circulation (throughout the body - therefore to the vagina and penis), or a lack of healthy sex hormone production (throughout the body - and therefore hindering feelings of arousal and sometimes contributing to vaginal dryness).

Sex: Nutrition and Circulation

Understanding the anatomy behind your sexual concerns and/or malfunctions will be an asset to finding herbs and foods that will improve your overall health and sex life. Poor circulation in the body can be attributed to poor eating habits or nutrition. Specifically, foods high in saturated fat, trans fat, sugar, and salt will all contribute to stifled or poor circulation in the body. These foods tend to increase blood acid (there by reducing oxygen to cells, nerves, muscles, etc), increase our chances of suffering from blocked arteries or blood clots, and hinder the transporting of vital nutrients and vitamins through out our blood stream. B-vitamins specifically are very helpful in hormone production, but as water soluble vitamins, they are also required to travel through the blood stream in order to do their job properly. This process is hindered when our bodies are plagued by poor circulation.

Sex: Nutrition and Hormones

Healthy hormone production is also very important when attempting to improve feelings of arousal, generate better erections, and increase healthier amounts of vaginal fluid. Testosterone for both men and women is very important, so ensuring that your diet is equipped with fruits and vegetables will definitely increase your chances of having a higher amount of b-vitamins that, amongst other minerals and nutrients, contribute to healthier hormone production. Specifically, however, when it comes to testosterone production, fat is of particular and exceptional importance. Testosterone is created by fat, or cholesterol. Free testosterone (the more healthy form) is created by monounsaturated fats (omega 9s), polyunsaturated fats ,especially, help to contribute to testosterone production. Polyunsaturated fats ,however, do not contribute so much to your progesterone and prostaglandin supply as omega 9 and omega 3 will. However, please remember: saturated fats, trans fats, and even an over abundance of omega 6 fatty acids will definitely do the opposite and promote estrogen dominance in the body--there by reducing sexual arousal, hormone production, etc.

Increasing healthy fats (nuts, seeds, avocado and olive oils), drinking water, exercising, and improving bodily functions with a diet high in good minerals, quality protein, and vitamins will definitely help you on your way to a more enjoyable, healthy sex life. Remember to take a second look at your dinner menu when daydreaming about your other half-- it just might be the link between a better connection for the two of you.
